Tennis has Wimbledon, football has Wembley and the equestrian sport has Aachen. Here at the traditional showgrounds, the top equestrian athletes in the world meet up to contest against each other in the five disciplines jumping, dressage, eventing, four-in-hand driving and vaulting. They are cheered on every year by around 350,000 visitors, who come to Aachen to enjoy the world-class sport as well as the spectacular supporting programme. And Aachen is also a festival for the crowd, a folk festival, famous for its exceptional atmosphere, which is lent a very special touch on Sunday evening: Namely, when the final competition has been decided, both the spectators and the participants pull out their white handkerchiefs to wave goodbye to each other and promise to meet up again at next year’s event. Here at the Aachen Soers, the Wimbledon, the Wembley of the equestrian world.
